Understanding EPF / PF Accumulation in India
What is EPF?
The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement savings scheme administered by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Both the employee and employer contribute a percentage of the employee's Basic Salary + DA each month. The corpus grows with compound interest at a rate declared by the government annually.
How EPF contributions are split
Both employee and employer contribute 12% of Basic + DA. The employee's 12% goes fully into EPF. The employer's 12% is split: 8.33% goes to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS) — subject to a pensionable wage ceiling (currently ₹15,000/month) — and the remainder goes to EPF. For higher-salary employees, the EPS contribution is capped (8.33% × ₹15,000 = ₹1,250/month), so a larger share of the employer contribution effectively goes into EPF.
What is VPF?
Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) is an optional additional contribution by the employee above the mandatory 12%. VPF earns the same interest as EPF and is part of the EPF account. It is a tax-efficient way to boost retirement savings under Section 80C. Note that annual employee PF + VPF contributions exceeding ₹2.5 lakh may attract tax on the interest earned — verify the applicable limits.
How the calculation works
This calculator models year-by-year EPF accumulation. Each year, Basic + DA is grown by the salary growth rate. Monthly contributions are calculated based on the chosen method. Interest is applied on the opening balance for the full year, plus half-year interest on contributions added during the year (a common approximation). The closing balance rolls over as the next year's opening balance. In year-wise rate mode, each year's specified rate is used for that year's interest.
EPF interest rate
EPFO declares the EPF interest rate annually. The rate has ranged between 8.10% and 8.65% in recent years. The current declared rate is 8.25% for FY 2023-24. Use the year-wise rate mode to model scenarios where the rate varies over time.
Important Notes
- This calculator gives an indicative EPF accumulation estimate.
- Actual EPF interest is declared by the government and may vary by year.
- EPS split, wage ceiling and employer contribution structure may vary based on employer policy and applicable rules.
- This calculator does not calculate final EPS pension.
- Salary growth is applied annually as a simple compound multiplier on Basic + DA.
- Interest calculation uses an approximation: full year interest on opening balance, half-year interest on annual contributions.
- High employee PF / VPF contributions (above ₹2.5 lakh per year) may have tax implications on interest earned. Verify applicable limits.
Disclaimer
This calculator provides an approximate estimate of EPF accumulation for planning purposes only. Actual EPF balance depends on EPFO records, employer remittance history, declared interest rates, applicable rules, and individual circumstances. EPS pension calculation is not included. Consult your EPFO passbook, HR department, or a qualified financial advisor for accurate figures.
